Just a little more Escape & Evade for Max, Jace gives her a chance to exercise the art of persuasion. Max has to face some ghosts from her past in a doctor who used to break her bones, and Lydecker is his usual self and betrays that same doctor even though he was involved with her in the past. There's not too much to it as an ep, but it was a turning point for Logan: by Haven he's back in the chair, and that gives him a chip on the shoulder and a recurring depression that can be frightening for Max. |
Dr. Vertes' locket looked like the one Max recovered for Logan in Art Attack. Logan sold his mother's painting: he didn't give Vertes her locket, too, did he? Vertes respected Logan's doctor-patient confidentiality, but not Jace's. Why'd they have to strip Jace to her tank top and shorts to tie her to the bed? How does Max know what standard procedure is for X-5s if they've been reprogrammed? Dr. Vertes didn't use any gloves while she was working, and she touched the needle after she injected Logan: that isn't professional or sanitary. What right did some nameless, faceless soldier have to give the order to take out Jace? When rushing back to Logans (because she was worried he would commit suicide), Max was totally passing in a no passing zone. She was all over the rode! Of course, i might be, too, if i thought that the love of my life was about to kill himself. The bus would not have waited for Jace to finish saying goodbye; i hate it when they do that on TV and in movies. |
I remember the first time i saw this i wasn't sure if Jace had really come around or if she really was trying to earn Max's trust. I don't like to rewatch this episode a lot: it gets too boring for me. I guess i just don't have much compassion for someone who didn't want to be free. I'm glad Jace made the decision to leave Manticore later, but i just don't understand her staying behind in '09. Once again, my favorite parts in this episode are the stunts. Max and Jace flying over Lydecker's head is such a classic; i think that he actually looked proud. But the character Female Trouble was most important for wasn't female at all: it was Logan.

Doctor Vertes is trying not to get killed and Jace is in the family way: these Females sure are in Trouble. Logan likes to watch basketball and is afraid of needles, spiders, and heights... Which is why he never goes to the Space Needle or watches Spider-man. You know, Dr. Vertes didn't seem like the type to be driving a 4 x 4 big wheel truck. Logan only got to walk on his own for about a week. Once again, Jondy is in this ep for about half a second. Manticore tells its soldiers that the outside world is dirty, diseased, and corrupt... They make it sound like the barracks are the Garden of Eden. Jace is a lot taller than Deck. Sketchy is great on a bike, and Normal's shoes are awful (party pooper). Normal's computer has a pink note taped to it that says "HUH?" Sandoval is already on Madame X's leash and we haven't even met her yet. Fourteen digit phone numbers and the number for an emergency is still 9 1 1. Female Trouble marks the eleventh anniversary of the Escape.

To me, the most important aspect of Female Trouble is how Logan develops as a character. While Max is slowly becoming more responsible and save the siblings oriented, Logan is rapidly descending into depression. He finally gets his legs back after six months in the chair and what happens? A week later he's losing his ability to walk. Once again, i totally relate to Logan. There are times when you have to think of yourself or you will implode: it doesn't mean that you care less about your cause, it just means that you're Human. I've had to deal with my own suicidal feelings in the past, and i've never even been in a wheelchair. Logan's feelings are normal, even expected, particularly when he usually puts his own needs aside in favor of others'. Logan came to a place where the weight of his own problems were too much for him, let alone the weight of the world. In that moment he could not see how his life could possible be worth living, how it could ever get better than where he was at the time. He didn't feel whole as a person and was so overwhelmed that couldn't see past his own grief. Mrs. Moreno's words were so powerful to me: "You have your whole life in front of you." I've been going through some rough times, and that's become one of the things i cling to. No matter how bad things get right now, they can only get better from here. I'm twenty, i have my whole life in front of me. That's one of the only ways i have strength to get through another day. Logan probably couldn't see that in that moment. When you're in that place you don't see how things can do anything but get worse, and you just know that you can't handle it when they do. Logan had no way of knowing that within a few weeks he'd be given an exoskeleton and be able to walk using it. He didn't know that Manticore would give Max a virus and a blood transfusion saving his life would make it possible for him to walk again. He didn't know that still using that exoskeleton would make it possible for him to jump over fences and hold his own against a Familiar. And we don't know what tomorrow holds. I feel like my life is majorly whack right now, but maybe tomorrow something will happen to make it feel like everything that i've gone through was worth it. But i don't know: only God does. And only God knows when it's time for us to come home or that we've ran out of time to accept Him. That's why my life is in His hands, because i certainly don't know how to make it through a day without Him. Max was terrified to lose Logan; i'm terrified to lose God. I know that i can't, that He'll never leave me or forsake me, but sometimes i lose sight of that. God understands when that happens, He understands us more than we do ourselves. If you are hurting in your life right now i'd like to invite you to become a child of God, because He'll never diss you. He loved you enough to send His only Son to die for you.
