The episode that marked the halfway point for Dark Angel's first season, Rising rose to the occasion and hits the mark when it promotes love of an unusual kind: loving someone enough to die for them. Max and Original Cindy aren't romantically involved, but our gentically enhanced killing machine loved her friend enough to put an implant in her head that meant certain death, just so she could save OC's life.. Even if she did survive, Max knew that it could and would change the nature of their friendship and that there would be no going back: OC would finally know the truth. For better or for worse, OC is Max's boo, and Max is OC's, a fact that made this ep a defining factor in their friendship for the rest of the series, especially in the events leading up to Freak Nation. |
The "Red menace"? Puhleaze! About Max's pager... Why was OC's the last number on it? In Red, Max dropped the pager the night before the trial Bruno was to testify at. OC called Logan because she was "blowin' up" Max's pager but didn't get a reply. Logan then told Max (over the phone) that he'd been paging her all morning (might not be true: might have just said it because OC called him). But Max's pager had already been stepped on the night before, so neither number should be able to appear on it anymore, even if they were trying to page her. Still, i suppose OC could have been the last one to page her the night before. Why does Dr. Carr have to "hold a good thought" for Logan? Why can't he just pray? The "I found freedom in service" and "No regrets" bit sound just a little too much like the Jem'Hadar on Deep Space Nine. Did that Red have to break the desk? Why didn't OC, Herbal, and Sketchy wonder why Max didn't ever come back with a pitcher? That piece of blue glass that Max picked up: it was a little big for Logan to have missed it. Why did Logan waste time going to Sebastian's before he went to Washington Meridian (the only reason i can think of is so he was already there for the defribulator and because production would be a bit cheaper). Sebastian said that the implant was at the base of Max's skull, but it was below her barcode: last time i checked, that was called a neck. |
Rising is an episode where Max changes a lot. At the beginning of the series she was a self-centered rebel without a cause. There were always glimpses of the real her that we hoped she would become, but there was always a part of her that was abrasive, where she only cared about what happened to herself. We watched her gradually change and mature over the course of the season, and in this episode there's suddenly a change: while in the past she's helped people simply because she could (why not kick ass when it's so easy?) Max suddenly found someone she couldn't beat: the Reds. OC's call makes it apparent that she needs to be able to defeat them, so Max did the only thing she could: she risked everything because she knew that it was the right thing to do. The victory almost at a terrible cost, and afterwards she has to ask herself some hard questions, like whether she should go back to Manticore ("I'm bad news, Logan"). It's only then that you start to realize how much these events affected her. From this point forward, Max looked upon with her "brothers" and "sisters" in a different way. She wasn't their "little sister" anymore: she had grown up. Rising is where Max finally comes into her strength, and its events are why Max felt responsible to Zack, to Ben, to Tinga, to the transgenics who were locked in Manticore while it was burning down, and the Freaks that have now formed the Freak Nation. Logan and Original Cindy are part of why she's so strong, how she gets through the hard times: together, who knows? All that and it was only halfway through the first season.

Rising to the occasion is why Max put that bitch in her head. Logan/Michael has great feet! I love the way they zoomed in, gradually showing the candle burn down to nothing. They effect where they went from the pager lcd readout, to Seattle, to Max was really good, too. It's Kendra's last ep: guess she took off with Mr. Multiples. Cindy's originality was freaking out her boss. The guy that the Red threw onto the pool table: if i'm not mistaken, it's the same guy who played the security officer that Phil knocked out for Max in IAIAAC. He also looks like he could be John Savage, Jr. 46 Euclid (incarcerated: solicitation of a minor) is the same address Herbal refused to deliver a package to in Heat. That's one of the things i love about this show: they follow up on little things like that. Normal threatens to fire Max if she's ever late again, but she's still working for him (and coming in late) in Freak Nation. Max and Original Cindy's conversation may have been the first time they used "freak" to describe a transgenic. You're the miracle, Max... Miracle Max: the Angel Bride. I mean miracle woman... Hey: that would make a good fanfic!

| This is a very good episode because it displays agape love (love where you would give your life for another). At the same time, Kendra is grossing me out with Mr. Mulitples (i don't care if he's separated or not, she still shouldn't be knocking boots with him), and OC is a little tmi with all her past lovers. Still, it does take all kinds to make a world, and once again Original Cindy proves that she can accept you for who you are. | |||||
